The Steam Never Arrived MM 'Show Meh' is A Disappointing Start to Carnival 2027

Well, here we are, but oh gosh MM, I am not sold on this first release! Every Carnival season comes with high expectations, and when the artist is Machel Montano, those expectations are even higher. Unfortunately, after multiple listens, "Show Meh" on “D Soca Steam Riddim” just doesn't deliver the impact we expected from the King's opening salvo for Carnival 2027.

Let's be honest. If this song had been released by a lesser-known artist, it could effortlessly have become just another release lost in the ever-growing flood of new music. That's harsh, but that's how it hit us. We believe that Tempa's "Answer" has a better vibe for this production.

The irony is that the song's message is actually a typical carnival-themed one. Written by Shane Howell, Emmanuel Rudder, Machel Montano, and Miguel Charles, the lyrics encourage self-expression, authenticity, and being comfortable in your skin. There is positivity here and a message worth embracing.

However, Soca is as much about how the message is delivered as the message itself. How it feels, what vibe the song brings, and something every Soca music lover knows... how it hits!

The production team tried but... but, sigh. Produced by Bing Bang Studioz, Studio Impact, and Miguel Charles, the D Soca Steam Riddim simply doesn't generate the level of excitement its title promises. The groove never fully builds, the hook fails to grab hold, and the overall production lacks the punch, urgency, and memorable moments that usually make a Machel Montano release impossible to ignore.

That's not to say it's a bad song. It isn't. Any song produced will have a fan, someone who loves it, but in the business of Soca, that does not lead to success. The diaspora must approve!

Let's be blunt: It's just not the kind of song that announces, "The King has arrived."

It may grow on listeners over time. Perhaps the live performances will reveal something we're missing. But based solely on the first listen and initial reaction, this one feels more like a supporting album track than a season-defining anthem.

For an artist who has repeatedly raised the bar over the years, we expected more steam from "D Soca Steam."

What do you think? Are we being too hard on Machel, or did this one miss the mark?
