Sparrow’s Voice Lives Forever — Today, Trinidad Says Goodbye

Today, the world’s greatest calypsonian, Dr. Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco, was laid to rest in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He received a full national send‑off. The funeral service was held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA)—a fitting venue for a man whose voice, wit, and artistry shaped calypso for more than six decades. The ceremony was streamed live via WACK 90.1FM Visual Radio and Trinidad & Tobago Television (TTT). The attention of the Caribbean diaspora and music aficionados around the world watched the service online.

🕊️ A Life in Calypso—Key Highlights
  • Born Slinger Francisco in Grenada, he was brought to Trinidad as a child. His upbringing led him to become the Calypso King of the World.
  • He achieved his breakthrough in 1956 with “Jean and Dinah," winning both Calypso Monarch and Road March titles.
  • Recorded hundreds of songs, blending humor, social commentary, political satire, and storytelling that defined modern calypso.
  • Influenced generations across the Caribbean, North America, and Europe, bringing calypso to international audiences.
  • Honored with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, among many national awards.
  • Celebrated globally, with tributes held in New York, London, and across the diaspora.
🇹🇹 Today’s Farewell
The national funeral included:
  • A procession through Port of Spain beginning at Independence Square.
  • Cultural tributes will feature steel orchestras, moko jumbies, traditional masquerade, and selected recordings from Sparrow’s vast catalogue.
  • A formal celebration of life at NAPA, attended by family, dignitaries, musicians, and citizens honoring his legacy.
❤️The legacy of Sparrow lives on. The Mighty Sparrow was more than a calypsonian—he was a cultural institution, a storyteller, a social commentator, and a voice that carried the soul of the Caribbean to the world. His music, his humor, his mischievous laughter,  and his unmatched stage presence will keep inspiring future generations.

Today the Caribbean diaspora and Trinidad and Tobago bid farewell to a legend. But his music will forever rule the nation that adopted him... it will last forever in the hearts and minds of the people for generations, and yes, Sparrow’s songs, his spirit, and his legacy will live on forever.
