Mical Teja, the singer, songwriter, and producer who has been taking this Carnival season by storm, has won the 2024 Young Kings Calypso Monarch competition with his hit song “DNA”. The competition was held last night by the National Action Cultural Committee at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah.
Teja placed first ahead of Caston Cupid with “Straight from the Heart” and Dawren Greenidge with “Ah Doh Want to Do It”. His performance began with a piece by a Pierrot Grenade before transitioning to the sound of hi-hats and the line, “When we outside, is ah ocean of love.” Teja was greeted by applause while he began his rendition flanked by dancers decked in red, white and black.
His song “DNA” is a patriotic anthem that celebrates the diversity and unity of Trinidad and Tobago. The chorus goes, “Tell them freedom in we DNA. When every hand is raised, we become one race. Is only one stage, this the birthplace.” Teja is no stranger to the soca scene, having co-written hits for Soca artists in the past. He also started producing music before transitioning to writing and performing solo.
Teja has become a household name throughout Trinidad and Tobago with the release of “DNA”. He also has another popular song this season called “Runaway”, which continues the storyline of the character Lorraine from Explainer’s 1982 hit. Teja said he believes in using and building on the foundation that was laid by the past calypsonians and taking it forward.
Teja thanked his fans, his team, his family, and God for his victory. He said he hopes his music will inspire people to love themselves, their country, and their culture. He also said he is looking forward to competing in the Calypso Monarch finals, where he hopes to make history by winning the National Calypso Monarch Title.
