De Saltfish | Problem Child

Don't you just love our Soca artists? Hell yes, we do! It is said that Soca music will find a way to address a topic in a very unconventional way but in a  way that West Indians can easily understand and disseminate. This one is saucy and wicked and we like it just that way. This track is entitled 'De Saltfish'.

The tool of the trade is called double entendre. This was mostly used by the Calypsonians who wanted to say something without a bold 'in your face statement'. Instead, they used subtle suggestive statements that most West Indians easily grasp. Now, we have our Soca artists plying the trade with style... yes, Problem is a problem but this is a good problem to have.

Shertz James aka 'Problem Child' has a very catchy song, a teaser, and one that would have done serious damage for any West Indian style carnival. He chose a topic that was masterly handled by the great  'Slinger Fransisco' (Mighty Sparrow). Like Sparrow, Problem Child knows that 'all salt-fish sweet'! Each singer, whether Calypsonian or Soca artist, finds a way to tease the subject, how Problem Child navigates the subject could be discussed in a good Caribbean 'lime-session'.

This will put a smile on the reader's face, every West Indian knows that it does not matter how you eat your salt-fish, and there are so many styles out there, the end is always the same. The person eating the salt-fish feels a sense of power and accomplishment while the provider is always left smiling (any good cook will understand).

What is your opinion? Did Problem Child hit the sweet spot? The music is sweet and will draw you in but what about the lyrical content? Did you get it?  Just remember that all you can do is beg and most of all, no means no, wink, wink! Tell us what you think...
