It is that time of the year once again and today we present the listing of the artists who are in contention for a place in the finals of the Soca Monarch Competition in Trinidad and Tobago. This year, the listing has a surprise, look carefully and you would see one name missing from the listing of the Groovy Soca Monarch Semi-Finalists... Machel Montano!
Kerwin Du Bois will defend the Groovy Soca Monarch title while Machel Montano will defend the Power Soca Monarch Title. Apparently Machel Montano did not enter the Groovy Soca competition this year.
The show/competition is scheduled to take place on January 25, 2015 at 2:00 pm. The entrance fee is just TT$100.00. This year we have a venue change for the semi-finals; the show will be held at a new venue for 2015. That venue is the Queens Park Savannah (Greens) instead of the regular venue - the Arima Velodrome. The finals will be held at the National Stadium in Port-of-Spain on Fantastic Friday (the Friday before King Carnival reprises for another year).
Take note that Fya Empress lives in Tobago and will be representing Tobago and Saint Vincent in the competition. Skinny Banton's birth place is Trinidad but he lives in Carriacou and would be that country's representative in the competition. The listing below has the countries the artists are from (other than Trinidad and Tobago). Please note that Leadpipe and Saddis are in fact also known as Porgie and Murda... real names Osvaldo Reid/Reshawn Ince. They represent/hail from Barbados.
One final point to take note of is the fact the the winner of each category will now have the freedom to not not defend the title the following year. This was one of the problems Bunji Garlin had with the rules from previous years. The winner had to defend the title the following year of lose a large portion of the prize money... that will not be the case for this competition.
