This is new music created by Kubiyashi with lead singer Skinny Fabulous for Vincy Mas 2014. This song, entitled "Light Up", is an experiment of musical themes on a riddim labeled the 4G Riddim. This one fuses Island Pop/Soca, EDM and Trance elements to create the 4G Riddim vibe. It is always good to try new things but this one does not sell the carnival vibe that we are so accustomed to listening. I can't see this song mashing up any fete but it will have a place for those who love to listen to Skinny Fabulous and are fans of Kubiyashi.
I have to say that they have not sold me with this track. Skinny Fabulous is one of the big stars out of Saint Vincent and if he did not grab my attention with this track I don't think anyone else out of Saint Vincent has a chance to convince me otherwise. This song should groove well in the club scene but I can't see this making waves in fetes for Carnival.
I can't imagine Skinny Fabulous using this song for any competition in Saint Vincent; if he does he may not even place in the top five! What is your opinion... please let us know!
Press Release:
"We come to have fun on the road, fun on the road, fun on the rooaad!" This is the opening line of Skinny Fabulous' first release for the carnival season; "Light Up" sung on the LIME 4G riddim, produced by Alex 'Kubiyashi' Barnwell.
Encouraging his listeners to "Light Up" and "Burn the night away" Skinny Fabulous perfectly captures the essence of Vincy Mas, where Kingstown and the carnival city Victoria Park becomes ablaze with activity and nights melt into days in the carefree spirit of the festivities. Preaching a message of fun, rum and good times- the major ingredients of any carnival, Skinny Fabulous promotes an escape from the perpetual hells of everyday life to the freedom and merriment of music and mas. The hook of the song, an easy sing-along, features Skinny Fabulous carrying fiery yet melodious notes accompanied by sweet harmonious background vocals that fan the flames of the fun and revelry highlighted in the song. The song is definitely a party anthem as it appeals to the listeners' hunger for liberation and independence from regular programming and unleashes their need to free up and have the time of their lives.
"Light Up" timely release was appropriately aligned with the official launch of Vincy Mas 2014, dubbed the Hottest Carnival In The Caribbean and carries the torch as the first song on the LIME 4G Riddim.
The 4G riddim is unlike the rhythms of our own homegrown Soca music. According to Kubiyashi, the 4G riddim is an unorthodox island pop which incorporates elements of EDM with a bit of Trance; a colorful and perfect blend of 'freedom' music.
