Carnival by Explainer | 2010

Last night Wack Radio had a very special guest on air with Desmond Peters fondly known as 'Deso'; it was a show that I regretted missing. Unfortunately for me, I caught the show as it was winding down. However all is not lost, I will eventually get to the archives and listen to the program in its entirety. This special guest was Winston "Explainer" Henry, a boss Calypsonian out of Trinidad and Tobago. This man gave us so many wonderful songs including the memorable "Lorraine". What was surprising while I was listening was the sweet melodies and his wonderful 'singing' attributes. Singing seems to be a lost art in the Soca music industry today. During the conversation last night, Explainer gave a very short story about a very special song titled "Carnival".That song is the reason I went searching online to get a copy to use for this post. I found the track on Amazon and immediately purchased it for this blog post.

Explainer spoke about a song that was written but never recorded by the great Dennis F. Williams who used the sobriquet 'Merchant'. He explained that Merchant sang the song in the Calypso Tent in 1977 but chose not to record it.  He said that he asked Merchant why he did not record the song and was told, "that is ole ting man". Well, as it turned out, Explainer got a copy of a recorded show done at the Tent (from a patron), and with that copy, he made the conscious decision to record the song. I am so grateful that he recorded the song - it is a gem! This song, Carnival, can be found on the 2010 release titled, 'The Truth Unveils'. When you listen to the song you would come to realize how great a writer Merchant was and how wonderful a singer 'Explainer' still is to this day. Enjoy the song.
