Sometimes life can be so unfair. Oscar Benjamin, our beloved Oscar B, spent his days caring for his wife after she suffered a stroke… only to fall victim to the same fate himself. Today, we mourn a son of Tobago whose spirit was larger than any stage he ever touched.
As the electrifying lead singer of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Oscar B could sing anything—soca, reggae, R&B, or pop—and make it feel effortless. He wasn’t just versatile; he was a complete entertainer, a man who understood rhythm, emotion, and connection in a way few ever do.
Last year he released Above Ground—a song that now feels heartbreakingly prophetic. Who would have thought we’d be here today, celebrating his life instead of celebrating with him?
He will be missed, but his volume of music, his joy, his voice, and his energy will keep him alive in the hearts and minds of everyone who loved him.
Rest easy, King. Your stage lights will never dim.
