Mical Teja, the reigning Young King 2024, took the stage at the Calypso Fiesta held at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on February 3rd. His performance featured his popular song "DNA." The opening monologue was too long (1:31 minutes of the performance), and although the duration of his performance was relatively short, lasting 5 minutes and 41 seconds, the crowd was enthusiastic and enjoyed the performance. However, crowd support or appreciation is not scored! He sang for 4 minutes and 11 seconds. This was way too short and may not bode well for a place in the finals.
Teja’s victory with “DNA” at the Young Kings competition is a significant milestone, especially considering his fourth-place finish in the previous year’s competition with “Hall of Fame." We believe that even though he was successful with DNA at the Young Kings competition, it was the wrong song for the Calypso Fiesta. He should have sung "Runaway." This song has a better flow for Calypso and would have brought back memories of "Lorraine" by Explainer.
As the battle for the National Calypso Monarch title continues, many are curious if Teja will secure a place in the Calypso as well as push the envelope and win the Road March title. After this performance, we are not confident he will make it to the finals of the Calypso Monarch competition.
The competition features a lineup of talented artists, including past winners and soca star Machel Montano, who performed in the 27th position and took control of the stage. Let’s see how the rest of the festivities unfold!
