Machel Montano’s Soul of Calypso: A Tribute to the Origins of Soca Music

Machel Montano, the King of Soca, has released a new song titled “Soul of Calypso," which pays homage to the roots and evolution of Soca music. Soca is not Soul Calypso but the Soul of Calypso (Ras Shorty I), and this song tells the story of the genre's birth and current journey. The song was written by Machel Montano himself and produced by Michael “Tano” Montano.

Through Calypso, all stories are told. Today, the 'King of Soca' draws from 'the well' of Mother Calypso and delivers a superb composition that should rekindle our love for Calypso while educating the public about the birth of Soca.

This is a much-needed song and a surprise to many who thought Machel would not release music for Carnival 2024. After all, he said he planned to take time off to focus on his studies. At least he is keeping his word "not to participate in events this year'. Then again, last year, he said, "I will never miss another carnival again" (Never Again from the Happy Daze Riddim). This song gives Calypso a much-needed boost!

In “Soul of Calypso," Machel Montano sings about the birth of Soca from the mother genre of Calypso and the journey of Soca into the future. He started singing Calypso, but today he controls the business of Soca. Machel's metaphor, Calypso, provided the history of our musical culture, from Kalenda to Calypso, Soca, and all the sub-genres. He also celebrates the diversity and creativity of Soca, which continues to fuse rhythms from different musical styles. He expresses his love and gratitude for Soca, from which he has become the biggest draw for this musical style.

“Soul of Calypso” is a song that honors the past, present, and future of soca music and showcases Machel Montano’s talent and passion as a soca artist. It is a song that will resonate with soca lovers and music enthusiasts alike and inspire them to appreciate the rich history and culture of Soca music. We love the song and recommend it; this one is a keeper!
