The National Calypso Monarch competition was the focal showpiece for the Dimanche Gras show last night; the show was entitled, "From Mud to Mas ... The Metamorphosis". The show featured rising stars and upcoming artists who aimed to dethrone the reigning monarch, Terri Lyons.
The Calypsonians delivered superb performances. After all was said and done, we have crowned a Calypso Monarch and a newly minted "People's Champion" for Carnival 2023. The son of former Calypso Monarch Duane O'Connor, Duane Ta'zyah O'Connor, emerged as the successor Calypso Monarch for 2023.
In addition to the newly selected monarch, voters also voted for a "People's Choice Monarch". This prestigious title was won by Kerine "Tiny" Williams-Figaro.
The National Calypso Monarch competition in Trinidad is a highly anticipated event that showcases Trinidadian music and culture. The competition has a rich history and has produced many talented and celebrated artists over the years. The winner of the National Calypso Crown is widely recognized as a leader in the calypso genre and a national icon.
The winner of the competition walked away with a huge trophy, a check for TT$500,000 and a Suzuki S-Cross vehicle valued at TT$300,000. Ta'zyah O'Connor's song of choice was "Sing Alleluja. Terri Lyons placed sixth last night.
