Women Dominate Calypso Monarch Semis | Trinidad 2017

Women Dominate the Trinidad and Tobago Calypso Monarch Semi Finals | Carnival 2017

The recently concluded Calypso Fiesta Competition that took place at Skinner Park in San Fernando  was a resounding success. In terms of the number of patrons who attended the show, the talent on display and the quality of the songs presented one had to be very pleased with the the product delivered by TUCO.

Maybe you did watch/attend but was distracted by the party atmosphere for the event causing you to miss a very important aspect of the show. That aspect of the competition that is so important rests in the final selection of the contestants for the finals. The gender power ranking shifted to the women... the results bear that out.

The women Calypsonians were awesome. Eight of the final fifteen finalists, chosen to go up against the reigning Monarch Devon Seale, are women. Oh and by the way the reserve singer is another woman, Lynette "Lady Gypsy" Steele.Their stage presence was strong, their lyrical content of their songs was worthy and their conviction and presence on stage raised eyebrows.

Now you may ask the question, what is going on with the young male singers? It can be said that the young male singers seem to be preoccupied with the glory of becoming Soca singers. There is some hope for the men with Ronaldo London, nephew of Brian London delivering a sterling performance. However, he is just one singer! The women were diligent and have produced some awesome songs for 2017.

It would be a fitting conclusion for a woman to be crowned Calypso Monarch for Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2017. They have the wonderful and appealing songs to get that feat accomplished. Now let's go out and support their efforts.
