Tian Winter emerged as the Groovy Monarch champion last night but it was Ratty-Gan, a crowd favorite, who emerged as the Power/Jumpy Soca Monarch last nigh/early this Sunday morning in Antigua. Ratty-Gan also won the the "Peoples Choice" crown last night/early this morning. Some of those in attendance were not happy when the results for the Power category were announced; they were not pleased that Tian Winter placed second! That was the only sour note last night... Congratulations are extended to both Tian and Ezzy Rattigan.
The winner of the Groovy segment won $20K followed by the second place amount of $15K while the third place contestant got $10K. All other contestants in this category collected $6K. In the Power Soca category the winner collected $25K, second place received $20K while the third place contestant received $15K. Everyone other place received $6.5K. The winner of the DJ competition walked away with $4K. All currency is EC. Ratty-Gan also received a Samsung Galaxy phone for winning the "People's Choice" category.
It was the show that the Soca faithful in Antigua waited for with anticipation. I was not able to see the show but listened to the performances via an Internet audio feed. After I listened to the Groovy category I like three performances. Tian Winter, Claudette Peters and Janine. I thought it would be between Tian Winter and Claudette Peters with Tian holding on to his Groovy title. I guess I did not pay much attention to "Set On" as he ended up in second place with CP placing third.
After the Groovy Soca Competition ended they tried to entertain the crowd with a DJ competition that really did not appeal to me. I simply wanted to move on to the Power Soca Competition.
I really don't know how to put it but let me say this... I was not impressed from what I heard from this competition. One song that made an impression on the radio personalities was "Golden Cup" by Ratty-Gan. However, the lyrical content sounded a bit controversial to me. I really could not assess this competition but most felt that Tian Winter would place rather than win in the Jumpy category. As it turned out the voice of the people is the voice of God and in the end the "Peoples Choice" also captured the Power Crown.
