Supernovas Steel Orchestra steps into a new era with “Steelpan in Dolby Atmos”—a recording that doesn’t just showcase pan but elevates it into a fully immersive sonic experience. This is steelpan captured with intention, precision, and respect for the instrument’s natural beauty.
The name of the album is "Pan American." The caption reads, "Supernovas Steel Orchestra presents the first dedicated steelpan album in immersive Dolby Atmos Audio."
At the center of it all is Amrit Samaroo, whose arrangement brings out the emotional depth, harmonic richness, and orchestral power that Supernovas is known for. His genius lies not only in the notes but also in how he shapes space—giving every section room to breathe while still delivering that signature Supernova's punch.
Then comes the technical magic:
🎧 We Capture—delivering a recording philosophy that treats the steelpan like the world‑class instrument it is. Recording engineers Kats Imai and Steven Paynter ensure that every placement, every microphone choice, and every capture technique is tailored to the unique character of each instrument in the band.
🎚️ Engineering excellence—every pan voice, every overtone, every harmonic bloom, and every ensemble blend is preserved with clarity, warmth, and dimension. The final polish comes from Graham “Zab Spencer” Carr, whose mixing and mastering bring the entire performance to life with depth, balance, and unmistakable Trinidad soul.
Dolby Atmos doesn’t just make the music louder—it makes it alive. You hear the frontline shimmer, the mid‑range dance, and the bass roll through your chest. It’s the closest thing to being in the panyard itself.
This is a milestone for steelpan recording, a moment where tradition meets technology, and a reminder that the national instrument continues to evolve in powerful ways.
Experience the sound of Supernovas Steel Orchestra and discover the people, creativity, and recording craft behind the forthcoming release of the first dedicated Dolby Atmos immersive audio album by a live steel orchestra in Trinidad and Tobago. From Amrit Samaroo’s arrangement of A Thousand Miles to the recording and mixing process, this short documentary follows a vision to capture the depth, energy, and versatility of steelpan, Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, in a way that does justice to the instrument and the musicians who play it.
With the “Pan American” album on its way, we hope this journey inspires other Steel Orchestras to explore immersive audio and bring their music to audiences around the world.
