Do Something Good — Honoring Bill Trotman’s Legacy Through Song

We are here to salute a cultural icon, Paul "Bill" Trotman and feature a song played by WACK Radio personality Mr. Desmond. That song, "Do Something Good," can heal wounds and make this world a better place. So here goes... In 1986, Trinidad & Tobago gifted the Caribbean a musical gem: “Do Something Good” by Bill Trotman. Recorded at Coral Studios in Trinidad and pressed in Barbados, the track carries the unmistakable touch of arranger Leston Paul, whose musical brilliance shaped an entire era of soca and calypso. But at the heart of the song is Bill Trotman himself—a man whose voice, humor, and cultural presence left an imprint that will never fade. Two of his better-known songs are "Back to School" and "Rat Race," but for this post we focus on "Do Something Good."

Trinidad Bill, as he was fondly known, was more than an MC and comedic personality. He was a storyteller, a cultural messenger, and a performer whose work reflected the spirit of Trinidad & Tobago. His songs were crafted with intention, wrapped in wit, and delivered with a sincerity that made them timeless. “Do Something Good” stands as one of those enduring pieces—a reminder of his ability to blend melody, message, and charm into something that still resonates decades later.

Now, as we mourn his passing at the age of 92, at the Eric Williams Medical Center, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. His transition marks the end of a physical presence, but not the end of his influence. Trotman’s music continues to thrive across radio stations, digital platforms, and every space that honors Caribbean culture. His voice lives on in the archives, in fans' memories, and in the hearts of those who grew up with his music. Mr. Desmond promised to keep this song alive on his programs at WACK Visual Radio 90.1 FM as he prompted me to do this post.

“Do Something Good” is more than a song—it's a call to action, a reminder of kindness, and a reflection of the values Trotman carried throughout his life. It is a piece of history that still feels relevant, still feels warm, and still feels like home.

Sokah2Soca salutes Bill Trotman.
His laughter, his artistry, and his contributions to our musical heritage will inspire future generations. He will be missed, but his music — his true legacy — will live on forever.
