The Listening Room #1 "Steamy Zess": How Does This Music Make You Feel?

We believe that Sokah2Soca is uniquely positioned to lead this bold, timely, and important cultural conversation so you can understand where our head is at and what we are thinking. Not only are we releasing a mixtape, but we are also creating a platform for generational reflection, truth-telling, and musical honesty. Now let's get started. Remember, we are starting the conversation; we want you to add, subtract, and finish it. ðŸ‘‰ How Does This Music Make You Feel?

Zess Soca and explicit lyrical content: Does a baby cry when it's hungry? If we can understand the youth's thought process and embrace the present moment, we can reach a shared understanding. This is Zess—raw, unfiltered, and unapologetically tuned to the frequency of today’s youth. DJ Weapon's Steamy Zess mixtape doesn't hold back. It’s a boom of bass, a blaze of bravado, and a bold declaration that the new generation is charting their own musical course. Some call it Zess Soca, but don’t get it twisted: the sound is a whole new vibe.

Yes, the lyrics are often explicit. At times, the lyrics may seem chauvinistic. The lyrics are often bold and even brazen. You will hear lyrics that discuss sexual backshots and boastful displays of prowess, which are likely to provoke strong reactions. This is what the youth are listening to, even if the "older heads" aren't used to it. This is their voice. And more importantly, the ladies are loving these songs. Lady Lava has tunes that join in and encourage this behavior.

Could you believe that this change hadn't occurred earlier? Did you believe that provoking curiosity wasn't a crucial aspect of our cultural development? Well, let me inform you—we’ve been here before!

When Lord Shorty (Ras Shorty I) first introduced Soca, blending African and East Indian rhythms into something new, it sparked backlash. Both the African and Indian communities questioned the fusion—neither group embraced it at first. However, the grassroots energy remained unstoppable. It grew. It transformed. Today, Carnivals in the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and now Japan revolve around Soca.

So maybe—just maybe—Zess is another moment of rupture before revelation. If the Soca producers don't continue to produce quality content, there could be an opening for Zess; the youth will, once again, change our musical discourse and course. Maybe time will polish the raw edges, or maybe it will blaze its trail entirely. Either way, it’s music worth paying attention to. Now, just so that you are aware, Bouyon is moving in the same direction with raw, unfiltered lyrics. Which one will stick is left to be seen, a story yet to be told.

At Sokah2Soca, we don't shy away from controversial conversations, and we want to diversify our content. We will continue pushing the boundaries and hopefully we won't experience what took place some time ago when Machel Montano put a red line on our post about Stage March vs. Road March. That is the year the trio 'Famalay' of Skinny, Bunji and Machel won the 'Stage March,' leaving Kes' Savannah Grass to take the people's Road March.

How does this music make you feel? We want your real take—no filters, no fluff. Whether you’re vibing with the Zesslife or side-eyeing its bravado, your voice matters here.
