The Electors by Pink Panther: A Timeless Reflection on Political Deception in Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago's snap election on April 28, 2025, is a time of heightened partisan allegiances and condemnation of those they consider enemies. To avoid picking sides, voters should consider each party's past performance and future plans. The classic calypso, "The Electors," sung by Pink Panther, highlights the deceitful tactics used by politicians to gain power and govern according to their selfish interests.

This is the perfect Calypso for an election season; we are confident that you will appreciate the message not only for addressing the issues of political malpractice but also because, lyrics aside, you can dance to the music. For those who love to categorize Calypsos, take note that this song is not only a political and social commentary,  but has a Latin calypso vibe that makes it very danceable.  This song will encourage the electorate to consider the value of their vote. We really like this song and consider it the one to post for this upcoming election campaign in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Calypsonian represents the collective voice of the people, and it is crucial that we pay attention to his words and record them for future reference. Dear friends, the future is upon us and it demands our attention. We have to decide. Calypsos have served us well as a mirror to what is taking place in our society. The calypsonian captures the sentiments of the people and delivers stinging lyrical content that resonates with the populace. As the election date draws near, "The Electors" is a song that is very relevant today. "The Electors" is a brilliantly written song that critiques the manipulation of partisan electors by politicians, a process that has already begun.

Pop-up jobs and road paving create a false sense of security, deceiving the electorate with short-term memory and misplaced trust. This is true for major political entities in Trinidad and Tobago. Politicians manipulate the electorate's short-term memory and misplaced trust, while the electorate often overlooks the party's performance and achievements, leading to a false sense of security. No one thinks about that once the music starts and the hype begins, but Pink Panther addresses all of these concerns in this song.

"The Electorate" challenges us to ensure that as voters, they are vigilant and use critical thinking before entering the voting booth to cast their ballot. The song boldly starts with:

"In 1946 we got adult suffrage; nigger and coolie got the right to vote.

But the wisdom that we do use this privilege, like we do, really knows what it worth.

We do care about the manifesto; sometimes we don't know who the candidate is.

But if a next election is called tomorrow, you know we running to participate.

You know why? Some vote for party, some vote for race; they don't care about this country or the problems we face.

Some vote for roti; some will vote for alcohol.

Some will vote for a jersey, and some won't vote at all!"

If you pay attention to the song, you would realize that the electorate is empowered to set the country on the right path with their vote but will seldom make their voting choice on facts. It's sad but true.

As the campaigns heat up, this song by Panther, "The Electorate," should be taken as a warning about choices made not by what  makes sense but by partisan choices. At the same time, it is a wake-up call for the electorate to inspire a new era and new engagement in the political discourse. It's an old song but a relevant reminder of our past mistakes and a rallying cry to just do the right thing, not for partisan reasons but for the betterment of all. Put aside race, rum and roti politics and vote for a better society and never be fooled by political shenanigans.
