Harvard Harps, under the direction of the talented and renowned arranger Liam Teague, teased a 'finals performance' at Tragarate Rd., Port of Spain, tonight with the sound of sweet steelpan! It was a night to remember as they enjoyed a masterly crafted rendition of Voice and Marge Blackman's "Full of Vibe." This did not sound like a "small band," but indeed, we were witnessing the preliminary competition of the "Small Conventional Steelband Competition" organized by Pan Trinbago! This is going to be an amazing competition!
During the first round of competition, Liam Teague's arrangement sounded polished and ready for a finals performance. The band had a very balanced sound, with every section clearly heard, bringing out not only the sweetness of the musical arrangement but also essentially what the competition is all about: the sweet sound of the Steelband orchestra. As I previously mentioned, this arrangement did not sound like a rudimentary piece requiring refinement for the finals. Then again, this was not just another night of practice; it was a carefully crafted arrangement that took the listeners on a musical journey to experience the vibrant and pulsating heart of Caribbean music.
As creative as we can be here at Sokah2Soca, it was an orchestrated dance of musical harmony and passion, born out of the desire to achieve musical greatness. We believe they did that tonight and expect to see them in the next round of competition. Kudos to all concerned, and we wish this talented group of musicians much success as they aspire to and with much resolve make their way to the top. We look forward to an even more polished final arrangement. Well done, guys!
