Double Entendre is mainly an art used in Calypso to provide hidden messages in song. Instead of saying something in the raw, the message is dressed up in language that West Indians quickly grasp and run with leading to a very popular song. This song, Mi Shell is one of those songs but this is Soca, not Calypso.
The storytelling is very good and the video presentation really told both stories about the shell (Mi Shell) and Michelle (in the end, Talpree's sister Michelle). However, if you are smart enough you will understand that the double-take Michelle that Talpree is crying over is not his sister but another woman named Michelle. When Talpree sings he gets the 'sweetest blog' he is not talking about blowing ain into that conch shell, wink, wink! There are mischievous scenes in the video presentation that makes one think that some kind of sexual act is taking place but quickly turns out to be a silly scene (like the girl polishing the horn on the jab helmet). There is much to appreciate from this video.
This is a well-written and delivered song. A song about a conch shell and someone named Michelle wrapped in a tricky storytelling scenario that intrigues the listener. We need more songs like this one. Well done Talpree!
