What Coming Next | Helon Francis | Trinidad & Tobago

The Calypso Monarch competition has had its fare share of criticisms with the results for the semi-finals causing consternation amongst fans of the art-form. Some favorites did not make the cut but one person sitting and watching the show is last year's Monarch, Helon Francis. What is he thinking? Better yet, what is going to 'bring to the table' to defend his crown?  Well, we don't have to wonder... he released his song today and it is entitled, "What Coming Next".

We do hope that those who want to wrest the title from Helon are paying attention to this young defending Monarch. He has matured with his victory last year and is confident that he can defend his title as Champion Griot for this year's carnival celebration. There are excellent calypsos released that are in the finals for example Tigress with her powerful song entitled "Who Feels It Knows It". This will come down to who can deliver a convincing and sterling performance on Thursday. There is enough time for everyone concerned to become familiar with this new music release from Helon.

So what about the song? Listening to the studio version we like what we are hearing. The pace of the song feels just right. The vocals are excellent and the lyrical content leaves one thinking about where we are as a society today. Presentation and performance will be the key on Thursday night. One can tell that people are listening to this new music release already because the talk is, "That cyar beat Tigress"! Most people thing this competition comes down to two people, Joann "Tigress" Rowley and Helon Francis. So let me warn people, Gypsy is a master competitor with a very good calypso entitled, "When Elephants Fight". He performed in one of the most difficult position (position one) and qualified for the finals... he could be the silent tiger in this competition. We wish them all success but only one will emerge winner!
