An indigenous Caribbean Riddim with the Name Osaka (a city in Japan) having the very first Video shoot in Tokyo, Japan (capital city of Japan). One would think that since the name of the Riddim is Osaka that "Personal" by 5-Star Akil would have been filmed in Osaka...shouldn't they have done that?
Well, maybe it was the lure of the 'big city' or because they were in Tokyo for "Japan Soca Weekend' that made filming in Tokyo logistically a sound decision.
So Today, for this post, we are all about 5Star Akil's "Personal". This song is the first video shot by a Caribbean artiste for a music video.
Personal is considered the first music release from the Riddim and primarily because it was the first video shoot it is out front and center for the listening public to judge. Which song on the Osaka Riddim will rise to the top? For the fans of each artiste that is an easy conclusion. For the fans of 5-Star Akil the song, the vibe and the optics clearly have them feeling good about their singer. Now let's do this, what do we think about "Personal"?
When we featured our first post on the Riddim (all five songs) we said the following about "Personal": "The video for this song was shot in Tokyo, Japan and is the featured track/video for the Riddim release. Talk about someone who is overloaded with confidence... he behaves like the man's man! The lion roars and he proudly struts extolling his virtues. It is just a one night stand! Well, we won't take it personal 5Star but we jokingly believe that you will have to work harder for it... #MeToo brother, women are empowered today. The more you listen to this song the better it gets. This one caught me by surprise. Excellent vocals, flirtatious and outspoken... we love it"!
5 Star Akils flirtations with female star of the video were playful and engaging throughout the video. Chiaki (lead dancer and girl he was singing to/for), exudes cuteness in the video shoot and really doesn't take it 'Personal'. After all, she has achieved something no other foreign dancer has, she has danced her way into the heart of our Soca World (she has many videos online dancing to Soca). The rest of the dancers somewhat overdid it with some of the dance movements but it turned out to be a work of art in dance... well done Dori Productions!
From this point onwards, my core belief when judging a song is whether or not it captures the 'carnival vibe' and if it brings pleasure to the consumer. Lyrically the track is sound but some may pout at the message and the overconfidence of the message. Regardless of your position, the result is a very nice vibe and a video shoot that looks first class. The music, vocals, engagement of the dancers in the video shoot (little-exaggerated dancing movements) and the overall feel make this one a winner. The rest is up to radio rotation, DJ engagements and feedback from the listening public. This one gets our thumbs up.
