Happy Emancipation Day Trinidad and Tobago | Friday, August 1, 1834
"On August 1, 1985, Trinidad and Tobago became the first country in the world to declare a national holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery". © Trinidad and Tobago News Bulletin Board
We headlined this post "Happy Emancipation Day Trinidad and Tobago" to mark the holiday celebrated today on our twin island republic. It goes deep but we will keep it simple and not complicate this day with an extended narrative. The paragraph below is from our Facebook edition of Sokah2Soca.
Be Blessed and Stay Blessed!
It is a day to reflect on the past indignation forced on our ancestors; we can shed a tear as we bemoan the cruelties suffered during slavery. However, we can use this moment to rise above it all! The physical chains of bondage may be gone but there is that lingering mental slavery that we need to emancipate ourselves from. So take a deep breath and make a promise to free our minds from this mental slavery, free ourselves of the 'we are not good enough syndrome' and in so doing forge a new path for future generations. Let us use this day/take this opportunity to rise above it all and celebrate a future full of hope and future triumphs! #sokah2soca
