I was very surprised by two things listening to the International Soca Monarch Competition tonight. One the singers disappointed, they did not seem to be in control of their vocal delivery. So many were singing at the top of their voices... it was very disappointing! The surprise of the night was the band that provided the music... they were very good!
The reigning Soca Monarch, Aaron St. Louis, did not have his sweet voice tonight. I was very disappointed because he sounded like his 'sweet voice' was not there/it was compromised - he lost the sweetness, the 'voice' was not there! "The Year For Love" is such a beautiful song and the official recording is excellent however, his vocal performance was prone for defeat tonight. In the end (as per the judges decision) he prevailed and was crowned Soca Monarch 2018.
After listening to singers I came away with the feeling that Marzville had the best vocal performance tonight. I also though that Ambi from Saint Lucia was very consistent throughout his performance. I also felt that the Trinidadians singing in the show did not provide good enough vocal performances. I was disappointed with Voice's performance but he still managed to prevail!
However, in the end, the judges have the final say and the results seemed to be in favor of the Trinidad and Tobago artistes. It is a shame that Marzville did not even place in the top four positions. This title should have gone to Barbados!
