Antigua's Pan, Soca, Calypso & Road March Winners 2013

Here are some of the results for Antigua's recently concluded Carnival 2013. I decided to highlight the results that had any relation to music. As a result this post will provide the official results for the Panorama, Groovy Soca, Power/Jumpy Soca, Calypso and Road March competitions.

Panorama Results 2013
Winner
Band Name: LIME Hells Gate Orchestra (founded 1945)
Song/Singer: Vivian Richards by King Short Shirt
Musical Arrangement: Khan Cordice

First Runner Up
Band Name: Cool and Smoothe Ebonites Gate Steel Orchestra
Song/Singer: Something Got A Hold On Me - Claudette Peters

Second Runner Up (Tie)
Band Name:W.I.O.C. Gemonites
Song/Singer: Steel Band Bonanza by Edimelo
Band Name: Carib Seas Harmonites Steel Orchestra
Song/Singer: St. John's Town Mash Down by Mighty Swallow

Pan on the move! Panorama is the heart and soul of the Carnival in a traditional sense. Soca music may drive the carnival today but Carnival without Panorama is no Carnival at all. The bands may not be large as those in Trinidad but they know their art for sure. Antigua has a rich Pan history and even had a Panorama competition long before Trinidad and Tobago their first competition in 1963! The first Panorama competition in Antigua was held in 1949 and was won by Hells Gate!

Groovy Soca Monarch Results
Winner
Name of Singer: Tian Winter
Song: Roaming

First Runner Up
Singer: Set On
Song: Smile

Second Runner Up
Singer: Claudette Peters aka CP
Song: Belong To A Flag

No one questioned the wisdom of the judges for the Groovy Soca Competition. Tian Winter will continue to rule this sub-genre of Soca for years to come. The Groovy Soca competition suits his voice and sweet singing style. He will not be easily defeated for years to come.

Power/Jumpy Soca Monarch Results
Winner
Singer: Ezzy Rattigan
Song: Golden Cup

First Runner Up
Singer: Tian Winter (last year's monarch)
Song: Aint Got Not Time For That

Second Runner Up
Singer: Hard Knaxx
Song: Jam Jam

The results for Jumpy segment of the Soca competition was not totally accepted by some patrons in attendance. Many thought that Tian was the winner and some threw 'missiles' on stage to show their disapproval of the results. However, many felt that Golden Cup was the song of the night. Tian may have sung better, performed better but "Golden Cup" garnered the approval of the majority of people who attended the show - the roar of approval from the crowd said it all and sealed the results.

Wadadli Beer Calypso Monarch

Songs: Light of Hope & Ghetto Boys

First Runner Up
Name of Singer: King Singing Sudden
Songs: Raw Confusion & Looking for the King

Second Runner Up

It should be noted here that last year's winner, De Bear, did not place this year. This raised many eyebrows because even the radio commentary team thought that De Bear remained regal and did enough to regain his title... that did not take place and many left for their j'ouvert jam in shock!
