Fya Empress has repeated as the Ragga Soca Monarch for SVG Carnival 2013; the title returns to Tobago! As I mentioned in the islandmix thread last night it was a two person race between Fya Empress who sang "Ah Ketch It" and the "Hammer and Conch" singer Shernell "Sharpyon" Williams. Skarpyon was favored by many but in the end Lornette Nedds' fire burned brightly and the Empress prevailed! Fya Empress on stage!
Buni Garlin said that he is the General but last night it was Skinny Fabulous who claimed the title when he sang this song titled 'General'. I have to be honest as it relates to the Power Soca Competition because after listening to the first six contestants last night I gave up on that competition. No, I was not tired and wanted to go to bed (which I did) it was because I was not impressed with the performances!
I am not alone where that is concerned because the radio personalities who covered the show on Nice Radio were very critical of the disjointed performances last night. If you watch the video of Skinny Fabulous on stage you will notice that he appeared on stage about 4:30 into the act and it was difficult to understand what he was singing. Yes, the crowd went crazy but come on now that was not top notch! Can someone tell me how in heaven's name did the Opposition leader and the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent get involved to be on video for Skinny Fabulous? If I was someone competing against Skinny I would think that the judges would favor this artist for sure! Skinny Fabulous on stage!
In the end last years results became a Déjà Vu moment for both competitions. Fya Empress and Skinny Fabulous both prevailed respectively in the Ragga (Groovy) and Power Soca Competitions! Not everything went as planned and there are some unhappy people. I am sure the Saint Vincent CDC will get an earful of complaints from many disgruntled fans. Jamesy P, who withdrew from the competition, is on record saying that, "The thing cook"!
