Saint Lucia Calypso Monarch for 2013 is Minel

Last night 'Minel' emerged as the new Calypso Monarch of Saint Lucia. She dethroned last year's winner Nintus (did not place) in a competition that featured good songs, excellent vocal performances and good stage presentations. It was a good night for Calypso in Saint Lucia  with Minel declared the winner; she deserved the victory and is now a three time Monarch winner!

Here are the top three places:
  1. Minel - Kenny is King | So So Love | 773 points
  2. Pep - Monopoly | Cockma | 737 points
  3. Walleigh - Untitled | Gestation | 727 points
Calypso is always boss when it comes to Carnival celebrations. Yes, today Soca drives the Carnival but what would Carnival be without Calypso? Well I am happy to report that Calypso is alive and well in Saint Lucia! Last night the Calypso finals for Saint Lucia Carnival took place at the Beausejour Cricket Ground. This show made me a believer. I was very disappointed with the Soca (Groovy and Party Monarch) competitions that took place on Saturday night but the Calypso Monarch competition was excellent!

The singers came on and did their thing and did a wonderful job. I was impressed with the band (musical accompaniment) that supported the singers...that band was excellent! Compared to the Soca show these singers were well dressed and their presentations were very good. There was some thought that went into the presentations last night. Calypso in Saint Lucia whipped the Soca show; I hope the Soca people learn something from this show. The vocal performances were so much better than the Soca singers - I really enjoyed the show!

The first round of competition was tough to judge because they were all very good. I especially enjoyed the performance of Q-Pid even though I didn't especially like the way she ended the song. Invader surprised everyone with a new song for his first performance. After the first round finished most of the people interviewed had Invader as the winner of the first round of competition.

The second round started with a guest performance from the winner of "The Best Of The Rest" Calypso champion "Producer". 'Producer' is an 'Ole School Calypsonian' who did a wonderful job to prep the start of the second round of competition. Surprisingly the second round of competition did not live up to the hype. I really enjoyed Minel's performance; she was excellent! The favorite from the first round Invader came on and did a Soca song... really it was Soca! The final singer Q-Pid was consistent and had a good performance but (in my humble opinion) Minel stole the second round with her song titled, 'So So Love'.

I must applaud Choice TV for bringing the show live and free via the Internet. The video feed was good but the stage lighting could have been better (same thing I noticed for the Trinidad and Tobago calypso competition). I was critical of the Soca chat box for but the Calypso people in the chat box were good last night. The names of the singers and the songs they sung are listed in the order they performed last night.
