Not My Boi | Hamidullah Wahid | KMP Music 2013

Trinizagada is pleased to feature this track by veteran Calypsonian Hamidullah Wahid. The song is titled 'Not My Boi'; this song is one that most families can and will relate to especially those in denial. However, Hamidullah believes that he has done the right thing and thought his son (Roy) how to be a good citizen and decides to defend Roy's honor; but who or what is Roy? Listen well to the lyrics of the song and take it in the direction you want because there is cleaver double entendre woven in the lyrics.

Today we have so many songs that address wining and jamming for Carnival and simply can be considered raw and indecent. It is refreshing to listen to a song that is cleverly crafted and speaks about a 'tricky' subject without sounding lewd. Now you have to decide what this song is all about; is it about the good deeds of a son named Roy or something else?  I 'take/plead the fifth' on this one - you  decide!

Lyrics:
Clever! The singers diction is on spot and I was able to understand everything that was vocalized. The question is, 'did you read between the lines'?

Vocal Performance:
The singing is sound and Hamidullah sings this song is a very relaxed and natural style. He is an experienced veteran and does a very good job telling his story.

Musicality/Production:
I like the work done by Kenny Phillips but will not heap too much praise for this posting. You can depend on Kenny to produce music that does not stray from the traditional calypso base. What you get is what is missing in so many songs done today - live instruments especially the use of brass music in his songs. It is music from the past but sounds so refreshing hearing it in this song. I can always endorse music produced by Mr. Kenny Phillips without reservation.... Salt of the Earth!

Replay Worthiness/Lasting Appeal:
This is Classic  Calypso and in the tents you will hear people saying kaiso, kaiso and when you hear that it is time for an encore! Calypso music will never die and will always have a place on radio. The younger radio jocks may shy away from 'not my boi' but seasoned Calypso lovers will call in and ask for a song that is well crafted and sung - that will be the case for this song.

Originality:
That is the work of a veteran Calypsonian and a shrewd and cleaver music producer. There is no need to look elsewhere for a similar 'sound' or song. This is an original production and it stands alone.
