Going For Gold | Machel Montano

This is the first song released by Machel Montano for an upcoming album that commemorates Trinidad and Tobago's Golden Independence Anniversary. The album will feature various artists including International acts like Chaka Khan, Pitbull and Beenie Man. I am curious regarding the use of these 'foreign artists' instead of a total loca cast to celebrate our independent status!

Planning Minister Bhoe Tewarie who represents the government involvement in the project said the following:
“We wanted to do something not resembling the last 50 years, but the next 50 years. We want to put Trinidad and Tobago ahead,” Montano said while speaking to reporters after the launch of the song, and an accompanying video, “We are not only promoting Trinidad and Tobago, we are embracing and partnering with the world. We see it as a process of inclusion.”

Something is wrong with the statement made by Mr. Tewarie because I personally would not like to see the next fifty years celebrating music done by foreign artists but would prefer to see local talent on display. This government has already created much despair for many citizens of Trinidad and Tobag by not including the Father of the Nation, Dr, Eric Williams in many of their planned activities for this upcoming celebration.

The new Culture Minister also upset many with his comments about tendering for the organization and running of the Carnival even to outside entities. They (the government) should make every attempt to promote local talent and do everything in their power to ensure that our local artists get the best deal... the best promotion the government has to offer. After many complaints the Minister spoke to calm assumed fears of 'sell off' by many. Minister Douglas said the following:
“Nobody will take Carnival away from us. What we're talking about here is management skills and ability to run something better. The cultural knowledge as it relates to that, we possess. We own the spirit of Carnival and the spirit of Calypso, Pan, Chutney, Tassa and Pickacharee. So no foreigner can come here and tell us how to play Pan or make Mas or sing Chutney or (celebrate) Hosay".

The forthcoming album will also feature local artists but I don't like the idea of promoting the foreign names over the local artists who so deservedly need the promotion. The song posted below comes to you via islandmix.com; take a listen and give some feedback.
