Gallop wins St. Lucia's Road March Competition 2012

The final result for the most played 'jump up' song for St. Lucia's 2012 Carnival celebration is now recorded history. The race turned to a 'Gallop' and after all, was said and done and tired legs went to rest the people decided on the most popular song for the road. They chose to "Gallop" and until last-lap after which the reign of King Carnival ended for the Lucians but the celebration continued for the winner of the Road March competition. Soca Syco's song titled "Gallop" simply 'ran away' (galloped away might be more fitting) from the competition in serious "hee-haw/neighing" fashion... no horsing around with this one; it was a winner from the time the bands hit the street!

This may not be a song that many would love but it was the most popular song and just like "Palance" in Trinidad everyone chose to get into the "Gallop Dance" for this Carnival celebration.

The St. Lucia Carnival celebration was interesting and watching the parade of bands on stage was very insightful. The members of the bands masqueraded in an orderly fashion on stage. Each section went on in a very staged fashion and there was a narrative for each section of the mas. I also thought it was interesting that some of the bands on the parade came from other islands including Dominica and Guadeloupe.

However, on the final day of Carnival, everyone was interested in the Road March results. I don't think that anyone was surprised with Soca Syco's first place. The song gave direction and had a dance to accompany the music. That is a formula for a song to take control... and that it did. Congratulations to Soca Syco and his success in this competition. The fat lady has sung her final song... the carnival is over until next year!
