Soufrière Riddim | Precision Productions for SLU 2012

Precision Productions Presents | Fiery Soufrière Riddim for St. Lucia Carnival 2012

This Riddim will stand out not because the lyrics are special (lyrics are typical for Carnival songs) but because the entire riddim takes everyone back to a time when brass arrangements were special and ruled the day. Today most of the music riddims are created in a small room with one creative person adding all the instrumentation via electronic manipulation. Live instruments (traditional or one can say old school instrumentation) always have that natural sound. In the case of this riddim, if you listen to the track titled 'Brass fuh Spite' you will be surprised that the music sounds like a live performance! Listen to the music, turn up the volume, close your eyes and you may just find yourself at the Savannah!

Now to the faster tracks on the riddim. The drumming... the drumming is fast paced and reminds me of Kernal Roberts. Everyone would have a favorite, obviously but I do believe that Destra Garcia handled the speed of the drum riddim better than her male counterparts. That is just my opinion and I am sure those who love listening to Alpha or Teddyson may disagree with me. However, I have to say that Destra has to be careful with her renditions because this one has a familiar feel to it and this has nothing to do with the music but with Destra's delivery of the lyrics.

Double Entendre is the hallmark of the song delivered by Alpha. I guess that 'Mista Vybe' and Kasey were in a mischievous mood when they penned this song. If you are a fan of Wenhal 'Alpha' Gerald then you will surely enjoy  "D Wetter D Better"!

The song by Teddyson may have been written to win the road march competition in St. Lucia. The song has all the elements of a bacchanal, mash up the place on carival day! Whatever the reason is I get the feeling that Teddyson will contend for the road march with this one. The song, lyrical content and musical contributions have cause everyone to say the Precision has 'Gone Clear' with Teddyson in SLU!

There you have it... Old school style with today's Soca riddim. I saw in the press release that the essense of Zouk is embedded in the riddim but I don't sense that... I get an old school brass vibe with today's fusion of music that is called Soca...

Final Thoughts:
I like "Brass Fuh Spite" the best of all the songs (it is all instruments) on the riddim. I guessed it is because I like the live feeling I got when I listened to that track. The rest of the songs are very good but not special. I know the live instruments gave the songs a 'different feel' and as such make them stand out to the rest of music being released. In time the rest of the producers will realize that this it the path to future success that will make the music appealing to everyone not just the young listeners.
