Lady Africa | First Woman Extempore Champion

In a field dominated by men a woman rose to the top on a night that saw ex-extempore champion Lingo booted from the competition by finalist Brian London. Lady Africa has competed in the competition for the past 23 years and made the finals 21 times before she was able to take the title.

The Extempore competition held by the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCA) took place at the Queen's Park Savannah. This is the show where the Calypsonians initially are asked to sing on a topic pulled from a hat. However, the finalists have to go head to head against each other. This is the segment where they trade insults and attempt to win the competition by 'getting under the skin' of their competitors. The audience relish these moments and look for the first really good picong to stir the pot of controversy.

It appears that Lady Africa took the challenge to Brian London who was not prepared to do battle with a woman. He was not sharp and paid the price for his folly. He came in second in the competition after being topped (and verbally tapped) by Lady Africa.

Congratulations are in order to Lady Africa for her effort and continued belief that she could do it. Her name now goes into the history books as the first female to Win the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation National Extempore Championship on Thursday February 16, 2012!

Kurt Allen Wins Best Political Song in Competition
In another competition on this night Kurt Allen won the Political Calypso Category of the competition with his very popular song, "Long Live Calypso". This song is one laced with picong and points at the misgivings of the current government. He proclaims that this present government loves calypso because they provide so many topics for calypsonians to sing because of their 'mistakes'.
