Lynne Steele aka Lady Gypsy says 'no lie' and sounds like she means what she says but is she really serious or simply created a calypso to make waves because her brother is Minister of Culture. I understand that in every family there are those whom are never contented or always think that they got a raw deal for whatever reasons.
I listened to the song and said to my self... self this is one angry lady! However, at the same time, it sounds like the voice of one crying out for attention and support from the brother she craves attention from but whose agenda is focused elsewhere.
She sounded bitter rather than someone who wants the World to know the truth. So what is the truth? Will we ever know and does it matter? The honorable Minister when questioned about his sisters song intimated that from the little he heard (I am sure he listened to that song a few times) that she was not telling the truth. At the same time he wished her well in her calypso endeavors. I always dislike it when I see race used to achieve ones agenda but then again she said the does not give a damn. I guess she believes that the African Minister would reach out to the Indian community rather than his own family. Those are some serious and bitter lyrics and can be considered displaced aggression - she needs help!
The Minister stated the following in an article in the Trinidad NEWSDAY that was printed on Tuesday January 17, 2012: When asked if he was concerned that his sister was bringing family issues to the public forum he said, “If you know my sister, that would not be nothing new. In every family there is one of those; that is not a problem, that has no bearing on me, I wish her the best of luck, she is my sister, and that is most important.”
Family issues are always contentious when they are brought out in the public forum and in this case with people whom are well known in the society. As a rule of thumb the calypsonian has a right to vent and express his or her views in song. Let us hope that this was done to capitalize on the Minister's popularity (he too is a calypsonian) and to give the song some momentum. If she is really bitter then someone should point her to a place of peace where she can purge her anger and live in peace.
I must say this though, she did a damn good job with her delivery. She sounds genuine and rode the music well. I like her voice and the manner she delivered her bitter lyrics. The song is already a big topic on islandmix. Anything that has bacchanal written on it West Indians want to be there to say, 'is true and I knew that'. Some radio stations will enjoy playing the song while others will play it tongue in cheek. This one will be the talk of the town for some time.
