"Hot Spot" | David Rudder

King David Rudder has released a Soca composition for Carnival 2012. Immediately I cranked up the engine and played this track with great anticipation. After listening to this song I get the feeling that we have two pieces of music looking for 'musical separation'. What do I mean by this? Well it sounds like someone took a calypso sung by David Rudder and dropped the lyrics over a Soca Riddim.

I understand that these artistes always want to remain current and offer songs that would be accepted by a wide cross section of the listening public. The lyrics are strong but this song would have greater impact if it was sung using a laid back calypso rhythm.

Here is the YouTube Video of  David in the Studio recording

Do I like the song? Well yes... it is David Rudder and surely he has one of the sweetest singing voices out there. However, this rhythm seems out of place for this song. I think that we have been 'spoilt rotten' by David with all the classic work he has given us in the past. Maybe this one will grow on me and I may have to come back and rework this post - hey you never know!

As a Soca beat I must say it is a really nice one and for those whom are into the music more so than the lyrics then this is a sweet one to break out a sweat. I can't say anything bad about David Rudder, surely that would be sacrilegious indeed, but I still hear this one with a calypso rhythm instead of this Soca beat.

The important thing to note about this song is that the topic that he sings about is current and the 'lock down'of the country sure is in keeping with current affairs of the nation. Once again he has shown that the Chantuelle's job (aka Calypsonian) is the heartbeat of the people. He has reported on a current event and has morphed his musical style to suite the current change of space seen in the music industry. I still admire the talent of this great Trinidadian artiste.

Love what I've heard so far definitely have to get used to D.R. with this rhythm - sounds as though the two genres put together calypso/soca - Im not a sound critic not in the least but I can appreciate this new style from D.R.
