Benjai... Different, yes but I am a little confused or should I really say conflicted about this song. It is listed as Soca but after listening to it I still remain conflicted because, from my audio point point of view, this really isn't Soca! The song is titled "Kinky Wine" and is one of the tracks on the 'Kinky Wine Riddim'. However, as I write this post, I am not conflicted about how nice the music is... Damn this is a nice party track. Then it hit me.... BOOM - I like it. The more I listen to it, the more I like it!
I like how the song started and would have liked to hear the drama of the base a little more. The song has a smitten of last years wing to side theme but the base line takes you elsewhere. Do I like it? Yes I do... I like it because it is different but keeps you moving to the rhythm of the music. Does it captivate me - yes it does but this will not be a hit for Carnival 2012.
The track was produced by Shawn "Mr. Root" Mitchell and mastered by Scratchmaster. The song itself has me feeling like I am watching a thriller and the drama is about to start. This will be a nice track to listen to when driving down the highway. However, I don't know if Trinidad is ready for this kind of change in the music. It is a song that could be played year round and that is a good thing. I don't get the feeling that this is festival music... that is for carnival.
After all is said and done and the Carnival is over I think that this is one track that will get airplay and not sound boring. As I said before, I don't expect this to do well for Carnival 2012 but it will be one that will have a better radio life after the carnival is history. I like it!
