Gypsy's Ship (Glad Yuh Gone) | DeFosto | Trinidad 2013

The competition has begun in earnest with Winston Scarborough releasing his latest track titled "Gypsy's Ship (Glad Yuh Gone). The song takes a look at the tenure of Winston 'Gypsy" Peters as then Minister of Culture and his inability to walk the walk after talking so much about doing something for culture. He was, and still is, a Calypsonian who took the reigns of the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism with much fanfare. Everyone expected that there would have been a culture boom with one of their own in charge - many ended up disillusioned and in shock that hardly anything of substance was done on their behalf. DeFosto has decided to use the art-form that gave so much to Winston Peters to tell the story and the heartache that the Calypso fraternity felt regarding the tenure of Winston Peters aka Calypsonian Gypsy.

Indeed, today we have this stinging composition from 'The Original DeFosto Himself' that dishes out the dirt on one of their own. Instead of listening to laudable accomplishments, we hear DeFosto's punishing lyrical admonition in song, "Gypsy Calypso Glad Yuh Gone". That is definitely not the legacy that Winston Peters had in mind when he took the reigns of the Culture Ministry  and to get this tongue lashing from one of his own - a  brother from the Calypso fraternity. However, as an  extempore calypso champion, I am sure that Gypsy will take it all in stride and may even hit back with a song of his own - expect anything!

DeFosto has done good; he is always quick to pick up on topical subjects and has created a song that is lyrically vibrant and musically sweet and ready made to be played on the steelpan. He is an excellent songwriter and is the man who has replaced Lord Kitchener as the premiere composer of songs for the steelpan. That, of course, is my opinion. He is also an excellent singer and always performs well on stage. It should be an exciting year for this bard and we wish him well for Panorama 2013.

I am not sure about the name of this song. Mr. Desmond of WACK Radio said to me that the name of the song is "Glad Yuh Gone" while on the Pan site When Steel Talks they have the name down as "Gypsy's Ship". I decided to use both names.

The following notes were taken from the website 'When Steel Talks' (panonthenet.com):
"Global - For 2013 The Original DeFosto Himself, the man of music, is working hard at his craft and releasing several tracks, including his latest - Gypsy’s Ship.

The song focuses on Trinidad & Tobago’s former Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, Winston “Gypsy” Peters - himself a former national Calypso monarch.

Also known as Winston Scarborough, DeFosto is considered by many to be one of the all-time great composers of steelband ‘panorama tunes.’"
