Today we are posting the latest music release from Janet Jackson x Daddy Yankee. The song, entitled "Made For Now", was filmed in NYC and brings to life the beauty of summer in the City. Janet and her production team brought together Caribbean themes to deliver a song that will resonate for the summer of 2018. We are posting this song because of the vibe coming from the drum-kit; listen and experience that 'ah ha' moment.
I have one problem with this video. We know that Calypso came out of the bowels of Africa but Soca is homegrown/developed. This video gives the impression of a totally African influence... where does the Caribbean fit into this... after all the beat is Soca! All these top international artists are regularly using Soca style rhythms and bass-lines in their pop music these days but hardly any of them are giving Soca music or artists any credit for pioneering this musical style.
This is why our Soca artists need to get out there themselves and do similar crossover Soca music but ensure that we let listeners know somewhere in the lyrics of the song that this tropical music style is soca which we have pioneered and have been doing regularly in Trinidad since the early 1970's.
This regular use of Soca beats and bass-lines has been happening in pop music since Kid Creole & The Coconuts had the big hit called "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy" back in 1982 but these songs are usually labelled as Pop rather than Soca when mainstream artists incorporate elements of our music into their songs.
Here is link to remind you folks of the Kid Creole & the Coconuts 1982 Soca hit which was labelled as Pop rather than Soca back then and the same thing has continued regularly through to this day.
