At this moment the Internet searches are alive with people scrambling to get to a computer to listen to the latest release from Machel. Yes, today is the day and this is the moment. This is new music from the man you leads the pack; he is the trend-setter and when he releases a song everyone pays attention. This new song from the 'King of Soca Productions' is titled "HMA" and that obviously stands for "Happiest Man Alive".
So if you are the happiest man alive what, prayer tell is the advice given? Well when you listen to Machel and his writing team Gamal "Skinny Fabulous" Doyle and Alex Barnwell they want you to "Jump around and live meh life; Play ah mas and live meh life; I'm the happiest man alive!"! Hey, when you really think about it, that is what really happens when Carnival comes around for sure. Well I am sure the haters will have much to say but I am very pleased with this 'first release' for Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival 2014; I am not counting the Crop Over songs crossing over to 2014.
I should state here that persons who usually criticize Machel are singing his praises for this one and that could only be because of the Saint Vincent connection on this track. Yes, I am talking about the involvement of Kubiyashi and Skinny Fabulous. All of a sudden, "that boi Machel could really sing"! I can only laugh and mark this day in history - Federation did not work but it looks like Machel could finally seal the deal for true Caribbean integration... that is what collaborations can achieve. Take note/put a check-mark that Precision Productions also worked on this song!
The music for Carnival 2014 will have a distinct and different flavor from the early releases heard to date. This one is not the typical Soca that we usually hear with the drum set distinctly leading with the typical Soca beat. These artists and producers are making music to appeal to a wider audience. This one is not your typical Carnival release. I especially enjoyed it when the rhythm section took control for a short burst around 2:30 of the song. This is not a Carnival mash up song but a nice introduction and welcome song for the upcoming season... enjoy Kubiyashi and Machel's groove!
