One of the Boys | Joey Lewis & His Orchestra

This is the album that launched the 'Saga Ting' beat that Joey Lewis strummed on his guitar. As you can tell the name 'Saga Ting' came from the way the young men dressed and behaved back in the 50's.
This was the era of the 'Saga Boys'! It was an idea that Joey kept in his head as he got inspiration from the mannerisms of the Saga Boys while he strummed on his guitar.
He created a beat that he called the 'Saga Ting'.  From that point on the music 'caught fire' and the birth of the 'Saga Ting Dance' heralded a new era in dance halls across the nation. Saga Boys danced with their index fingers pointing in the air while the rest of their body simply moved to the groove of the music.

Joey played music with his two brothers Sonny and Randolph and eventually ended up playing in the piano in Sonny's band. Eventually Sonny sent Joey home stating that he did not want any little boys with his band. This circumstance only motivated Joey to want his own band and that eventually happened in the year 1954 when he formed the band Joey Lewis and the Teenagers! The story continued to developed and from an article written and posted on the website named basementrug.com we learn that the name of the band was changed to Pal Joey Lewis and his Orchestra after members of the band saw a Frank Sinatra movie. In the movie was a sign on a building that read "Pal Joey". They liked the name and adopted it for the band.

It is an amazing fact but the names of bands like the Dutchy Brothers, Clarence Curvan, Boyie Lewis, Vin Cardinal and Ed Watson all came after Pal Joey Lewis and his Orchestra.  Today we feature songs from the album titled "One of the Boys" and on it is the song Joey Saga (track number 8). Please take a listen to some of the music and musicians who paved the way for those who have inherited this rich music talent of Joey Lewis and his Orchestra.
