This song comes to you from an artist who goes by the name of Ragga; the name of the song is 'First Time' and I have to say thumbs up to the singer and producer of this track!
Usually I am very critical of songs that have anything to do with wining if not done well. Well the lyrics in this song passes the test. This is not simply a 'wine on a bam bam song'. There is a story behind the lyrics and as such I will give the lyrics a check mark - color green!
The vocal performance passed the test. This guy can sing and even though his voice is 'up there' in the high tone area it is not annoying or nasal. In terms of the music, I have to give the music producers thumbs up because this 'Groovy Soca' track will have people dancing to the rhythms accompanying the singer's vocal performance.
Did I say that I liked this song? Yes I did and, having said that, I can only add that in terms of replay worthiness and lasting appeal this one should do well. Everything will depend on how well they market the song and how much promotion they do with the various radio stations and publishing houses. In terms of originality this is difficult to say; the music sounds familiar but I can't put my finger on it. Then again, this is Soca and the beat is common to any person from the English speaking Caribbean. I am sure someone, especially on islandmix.com, will have something to say about the rhythm.
As far as I am concerned, this song gets the thumbs up and is one for your ipod/iphone or whatever mp3 player that you keep your music. Good luck to Ragga and his producers!
