Brian London will sing "This is My Land" Tonight!

Disqualified Calypsonian Brian London will perform his song "This is My Land" at tonight's Lord Brynner's (Kade Simon) 50Th Anniversary Independence Calypso Competition. However, the pride of southern Trinidad will do so as a guest performer.

Now before we move on let's listen to Brian's beautifully penned song for our 50Th. Anniversary of Independence. The following is the semi final recording of Mr. London's performance. Damion Melville was the MC who introduced Brian London to the patrons who attended the show. This recording is presented here courtesy WACK Radio 90.1 FM.
"This is My Land" by Brian London

Brian made it through the preliminary and semi final rounds and was selected to perform in the finals but was eventually disqualified when it was discovered that his song, originally called "Seniors" was performed by Eunice Peters in 2012 in the TUCO National Preliminary Calypso competition. The lyrics of the song were adjusted but it was claimed to be the same song resulting in the disqualification of Mr. London.

Apparently the problems resulting from the disqualification of Mr. London led to further discussions with the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism resulting in an agreement regarding the performance of the song for tonight's show. However, as mentioned before, Brian would do so as a guest performer. The song, "This is My Land" has become the most popular song played of all the songs for the competition.

The following is the press release from the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism:
“After holding discussions with Mr Brian London, officials of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism are now satisfied that the Calypsonian inadvertently submitted a previously performed composition for adjudication in the Lord Brynner Independence Calypso Competition.”

According to the release, London claimed the calypso had been previously performed without his knowledge or permission. London, it went on to say, submitted a slightly different version of the song for the Independence competition “in good faith, with no intent on his part to deceive the producers.”

The ministry said it reached the agreement with London, “with a view to contributing to the continued development of calypso and in order to preserve good relations within the fraternity.”

Michael "Sugar Aloes" Osuana replaces Mr. London in the finals while Devon Seale now enters the stage as the reserve artiste. Don't be surprised if  'Sugar Aloes' pulls off the surprise of a lifetime and produces a bitter sweet performance that would surely rock the Calypso fraternity. The 2012 Calypso Monarch, Duane O'Connor is brimming with confidence but some, like noted calypso songwriter Winsford Devine, will be on the side of Morel Peters aka King Luta to win the competition tonight. It is a classic show in the making!
