Vie Ke Vie | Yuh is ah Trini

Triniglish|Trinididioms Spoken and Explained #34 | Vie Ke Vie | Yuh is ah Trini

"How tings, I good, yuh know how it is I carrying on day to day, yuh know... vie ke vie". We do things every day we conduct our lives in such a manner that we don't think about it, we just do it.

We wake up and do certain things to start the day. Our morning ablutions may include a shower, brushing our teeth, shaving activities (both men and women... Ahem) and breakfast with a daily newspaper to catch up on what is going on before we walk out the door. The things we do every day, this routine that we don't think about but simply do can be addressed in the phrase "vie ke vie" when asked, "how things". In other words, the things we do "from day to day".

"How things (how tings)" is a typical conversation one can hear when Trinidadians (citizens of Trinidad and Tobago) get together and chat. A quick response could be "poke ah poke" or "vie Ke vie". Most of the time the Trinidadian really wants to let you know that nothing has changed and that they are doing OK.

"So how yuh doing (how tings)?" In other words "how is everything going?"
