Ah Ketch Ah Vaps | Yuh is ah Trini

Triniglish|Trinididioms Spoken and Explained #33 | Ah ketch ah Vaps | Yuh is ah Trini

Do you recall using the phrase "Ah ketch ah vaps"? Well, the follow-up question should be expected and it is a very simple one. Do you understand what it means to "ketch ah vaps"? Well if you are scratching your head at this point you may just have given up your rights to being called "ah Trini" or even the very popular "Trini2D Bone". Many of us, in our life, "ketch a vaps" and in many cases it is a good thing but not always the case.

Recently the former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Patrick Manning, "ketch ah vaps" and called general elections. Many Trinis believe that was the case because the Prime Minister had control of the Parliament and he could not have been removed from office without members of his party voting against him in the "scheduled no-confidence vote" by the opposition party. Well we all know what happened and that 'vaps" came to naught for the now-former Prime Minister.

At this point, most of you are breathing a sigh of relief because you probably ran to 'dig up' your copy of Côté ci Côté là or went online and checked out Tankalanka to read up on what it means to "ketch ah vaps". So for the rest who are too lazy to do the search or simply don't know here is the explanation. To ketch ah vaps is to be inspired and in this case, it is "sudden inspiration".

The local elections taking place today in Trinidad may have been because the current Prime Minister "ketch ah vaps" and wanted to ride the momentum of the euphoria of the last general elections that took place two months ago or it could have been thoughtfully planned to maximize their grip on government. I just "ketch ah vaps" for my next post. I used the word grip and it dawned on me that Trinis know what a grip is or how to grip things. Well, this could be an interesting one... until then keep your Trini pride next to your heart. Trini2D Bone.
