Caribbean Soca and Islandmix banter!

I posted the following commentary on "islandmix.com/backchat" in one of the Soca discussions. They continually fight over whose Soca is better and mostly bash anything from Trinidad. So why am I posting a comment from Islandmix here? Well, I want people to be aware of how much we have lapsed into the abyss of inter-island Soca condemnation. It is easy to see that we simply can't appreciate our unique qualities but need to bash each other simply for bragging rights - it is all so silly!

"The comments for this thread clearly shows that the music that is called Soca today is very different throughout the Caribbean. Let me put it this way in Trinidad our national dish is callaloo but one can find foods looking the same and called the same throughout the Caribbean region. However, the taste is different even though it looks the same and goes by the same name.

Soca today (even in Trinidad) is not the same music that can be identified by the beat of some of the original and big name Soca music that started the trend. When Lord Kitchener sang Sugar Bum Bum that beat was unique (listen to the toc, then two quick toc toc that was typical to the Soca sound back then). What is called Soca today is not the music that Shorty named Soca even that was different to Kitchener's Soca and even Maestro's music.

It is useless trying to argue and to prove that Soca from this island is better than Soca from that island etc. I say this here because it is a bone of contention throughout Islandmix Soca discussions.
Let us as a people realize that we are all unique and make music that is loved throughout the World. I live in the United States and I have never heard born American citizens say this Soca is better than that Soca. As a matter of fact they don't even know the word Soca but they understand that West Indian music is about having a good time - why can't we simply accept our differences and move on - love up the music that's all we need to do!"
